Countryside Care Centre - Aurora, IL - Holiday visit guidlinesThe holidays are quickly approaching and 'tis the season to visit with friends and family. Understandably, it is also the time of year when nursing homes receive a high volume of visits, be it from friends/family of residents, to local organizations and groups.  It is important to remember that there will be guidelines that will have to be followed and that these guidelines are in place for safety reasons and are in most cases, state regulations.  If you plan on visiting a loved one in a nursing home, here are some guidelines to consider:

FOOD  Regardless of which holiday your family celebrates, food is undoubtedly a major component of the event. Favorite family recipes are made, cookies and treats are shared, etc... However, if you plan on visiting someone in a nursing home, keep in mind that any and all food must be checked in by the nursing staff.  Residents may be on restricted or medical diets.  If the food you brought was approved for your loved one, it may not be right for their friends/neighbors, so resist the temptation to share. For sanitary reasons, please make sure that  all food items are stored in air tight containers.

DECORATIONS  Another common feature of any holiday season are the decorations. Many of the traditional items that we associate with these holidays will not be allowed for safety reasons:

  • Candles
  • Live trees
  • Wreath stands
  • Fiber optic decorations
  • Strings of lights
  • Extension cords
  • Power strips

It is always wise to check with the administration before bringing in any decorations.  State and local fire regulations in your area will determine these rules.

OUT OF HOUSE VISITS  If you plan on taking a resident out of the facility, be it for a family dinner at home or an overnight stay, it is best that you notify the staff (especially, the nursing staff) ahead of time.  It will allow time to prepare the resident with any medications and or supplies they need.  If the individual is on oxygen, check with the administration ahead of time to make arrangements.

SIGNING IN/SIGNING OUT It is mandatory, year round, that EVERY visitor sign in and sign out when entering most nursing homes.  This is done for safety reasons and is a security measure in case an emergency should arise.

STAFF GIFTS Many nursing homes do not allow the staff to accept personal gifts. Check with the administration for their regulations on this issue.  In most cases, group gifts (treats) are acceptable, such as a tray of cookies for the staff.

Though some of the guidelines might seem restrictive, they are designed as safety and health measures.  By following these steps you and your loved one can enjoy a wonderful holiday season together.

Do you have a loved one living in a nursing home? Do you have creative ideas for safe decorations or healthy treats?  Please share your experiences with us and leave any comments. We are interested in all comments and feedback!
