Aurora, IL-Countryside Care Centre honored Martin Luther King Day by participating in community volunteerism. Student volunteers, from many area schools, were organized to help with service projects for the residents.
There was a large turnout from several local schools, including Aurora University, Waubonsee Community College, Northern Illinois University and West Aurora High School. Volunteers were largely coordinated through efforts from the Community Martin Luther King Jr. Project Committee. This committee strived to develop a team of volunteers, in order to spread their services for those in need throughout the area on January 17th and celebrate the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. The committee was able to coordinate efforts at the local food pantry, the library and two local nursing homes; including Countryside Care Centre. Volunteers at Countryside provided personal services and gave hand massages, applied make-up, braided hair and gave manicures. Residents were more than happy to spend time with the young people and benefit from their time and service. Adult community coordinators, Allene Champen, Henry Champen and Cynthia Latimer, from the MLK project committee, worked to get volunteers to help residents at Countryside. Volunteers who came from the area schools included members of the National Honor Society and the Boys to Men Group, where volunteerism is an integral part of their mission. Residents at Countryside spent 2 hours with the volunteers and said, "They were delightful! I hope they will return next year for the same thing!"
Countryside Care Centre is proud to celebrate the spirit of Martin Luther King and would like to think everyone who volunteered at all of the sites for this wonderful cause. If you have any questions about life at Countryside Care Centre or would like a tour, please call 630-896-4686.
